About Us

The eight college essay seminars contained within Core Essays were designed from scratch with the education experience of two of Loudoun County's most accomplished reading specialists. Mrs. Marilyn Clerkin begins her 25th year as a Reading Specialist and her third year at Briar Woods High School.

During her tenure as an English teacher in Fairfax County, Mrs. O’Rourke taught the following courses:  English 9, English 12, English 10, and Pre-IB English 10. The personal narrative (aka: the college essay) has and will always remain her favorite unit, as the skills learned in writing this essay prove invaluable throughout college and in life beyond.

What are people saying about us?

The environment was great.  I knew I was surrounded by friends, and I never felt embarrassed about sharing my personal essays.  Core Essays saved my life!  I would have never made it through the process of applying to college without the help of Mrs. Clerkin and Mrs. O.

~ Maria Sampogna, 2007-2008 Seminar Participant (currently a sophomore at the University of Virginia)
